Ellen Carey asks these questions about her own work, following inquiries to women photographers worldwide in an open call put forth by Hundred Heroines in 2020.

Light’s immateriality challenges its makers today, analog versus digital, doubles our challenges. It is here, in modern and contemporary art, that one finds a “linked ring” to characteristics within the DNA of photography - science, optics, shadow, reflection, silhouette, process, chemistry - that today’s practitioners underscore in their concepts, enriching content, adding context, citing this history at the dawn of medium to now in their versions of drawing with light.”

These questions found fifteen artists short-listed to participate in an online exhibition, under the Hundred Heroines: Women in Photography platform whose focus is a global organization on women in photography. Nettie Edwards was selected by Ellen Carey, ranked as one of the top 100 photographers worldwide by HH; both exhibited in Struck by Light online and in London 2020.

Collaboratively, the artists have partnered with EXP-21 International Festival on Experimental Photography and Valid World Hall, presenting a group exhibition Struck by Light in Barcelona. The exhibition symbolizes, creativity and strength, with imagination and experimentation, entering the new Wonder World in Photography.
